One in seven children is allergic

Surely it has happened to you that, when a special occasion arrives in which your child is going to share space and meals with friends, it is necessary to ask or tell the father responsible for the child if he has any allergies because, really, it is more and more frequent the incidence of intolerance and allergies among children.

Currently, according to data from Histasan, Madrid Association of Food Allergies, one in seven children is allergic (in Spain). Food allergy tops the statistics as the one that has experienced the greatest increase in childhood; in Spain it affects 7.5 percent of the child population, of which almost half are usually allergic to two or more foods.

Food allergy consists of an organism's reaction as an immune response when consuming a specific food or additive incorporated in it. One of the most common allergies among children is that of milk (and derivatives) and eggs (to a lesser extent, to nuts). The main problem is that all of them are present in a large number of manufactured products.

I can attest to this reality because for my son's birthday, one of his friends attended who was allergic to milk and eggs, and it was difficult for me to find everyday foods that did not have, among their ingredients, milk or eggs . To my surprise, many brands of sliced ​​bread, cold cuts and desserts, contained these foods, even in traces. This taught me to appreciate the care that many parents take in supervising the feeding of their child with a food allergy.

It is estimated that by 2020 allergies will affect 50% of the world's population, but the importance of this type of allergy is not only given by the high number of people affected, but also and especially by the magnitude of the reactions it causes, which can range from a simple skin involvement to anaphylactic shock and even death, according to the Histasan association tells us.

Once the food that causes the allergic reaction in our children has been discovered, the only treatment for the moment is prevention, for which it is necessary to control the diet, completely excluding the responsible food from the diet. This may seem simple to us, but its compliance runs into some difficulties, since highly allergenic foods are used in the processed products, and the labeling does not always allow to recognize the exact composition and the manufacturing process of the products.
