Maternal malnutrition, both before conceiving and during pregnancy, is associated with an increased risk for the future mother and the baby. Specialists have determined that women with a body mass index lower than 18.5 are more likely to have a premature delivery or a low-birth-weight baby.

There are certain factors that have been associated with insufficient gestational weight gain, such as poverty, teenage pregnancy, abuse, restrictive diets, or eating disorders, among others.

Weight gain during pregnancy must be defined specifically for each woman, taking into account the pre-gestational weight. In the case of low weight of the pregnant woman, it should be recommended to increase by 150 calories a day for the first trimester of pregnancy, 300 calories a day for the second and 500 calories a day for the third trimester.
