Rufa is a calm and good-natured hare, but she had a disability, was very short-sighted and completely deaf.

And it was precisely her hearing impairment that saved our little protagonist from certain death. The Rufa Hare is a beautiful story about disability for children. A beautiful story that you can read with your children and practice reading comprehension with the activities that we propose at the end of the story.

Shotgun blasts echoed throughout the forest:

- Boom! Boom! Boom! Pum…!

All the animals went to shelter terrified. The rabbits lowered their ears and ran to hide in their burrows; the birds flew in flocks to their nests; the gazelles ran, like what they were, quickly moving away from that dreaded noise; herds of wild boars headed for the more wooded areas and, in a moment, the forest was completely empty.

- Boom! Boom! Boom! Pum…!

It seemed so, but a hare named Rufa, with very little sight and completely deaf, she was sitting quietly in the shade of a tree, not knowing anything. After eating copious amounts of mushrooms, roots, bulbs, and some delicious berries, she lay down right there and fell asleep.

Shortly after, the three hunting dogs arrived, and jumping around them agitatedly, they began to bark very loudly, to attract the attention of their owners.

- Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow ...!

But Rufa slept without knowing anything and the dogs, confused, barked louder still, showing their fangs.

- Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow ...!

The bigger dog came up and growled at her side, sniffing her.

- Grrrr, grrrrr, grrrr, grrrr ...!

That hare showed them nothing of fear, they thought. He hadn't even been scared when he saw them coming. They looked at each other puzzled and very restless. Fearing to appear cowardly to their owners, they walked away quickly barking in the opposite direction.

Immediately, the hunters arrived, seeing their three dogs barking in the other direction, they followed them without suspecting anything strange. The men, with their shotguns, passed a few meters from Rufa, who, thanks to his poor vision and deafness, he continued to sleep peacefully, ignoring, that he had just been saved from almost certain death.

If you have already read the story, you can check if the child listened to and understood what it was about by asking these questions:

- Who was the protagonist of the story?

- Was it the mute hare?

- Why did the forest animals run?

- What was the hare doing while they fled?

- Did they catch her? Why?
